Fungal Culture and Identification by MALDITOF (Vitek MS) – Blood

This test detects the presence of fungal pathogens in the blood by culturing a blood sample on a specialised medium and using an automated identification system.

Identifying the causative organism for appropriate treatment selection. Assessing the severity of the infection. Monitoring treatment effectiveness. Determining the need for long-term antifungal therapy.

This test may be recommended if you Show symptoms of a systemic fungal infection, such as fever, chills, or unexplained weight loss. Have a known risk factor for fungal infections, such as immunosuppression or recent hospitalisation. Are undergoing treatment for a fungal infection to monitor response to therapy. Have persistent or recurrent fungal infections.

If the test shows abnormal results, it may indicate a fungal infection.

A 3 ml sample of blood will be collected from you using a needle and collected in a specific bottle or sodium heparin tube. The sample will be cultured on a specialised medium to promote fungal growth and sent to the lab for identification.
