Copper (Urine)

This test measures the amount of copper excreted in your urine over a 24-hour period.

• To diagnose and monitor Wilson's disease, a genetic disorder that causes abnormal copper accumulation in the body
• To assess copper levels in patients with liver diseases, as excessive copper can damage the liver
• To evaluate treatment effectiveness for conditions related to copper metabolism
• To monitor dietary copper intake or assess copper toxicity

This test may be recommended if you:

• Have symptoms or signs suggestive of Wilson's disease, such as liver problems, neurological issues, or characteristic ring around the cornea
• Have a family history of Wilson's disease
• Have liver disease or are undergoing treatment for it
• Are on long-term parenteral nutrition
• Are being monitored for excessive copper exposure

Abnormal results may indicate Wilson's disease, liver diseases, or other conditions affecting copper metabolism. However, abnormal results do not necessarily confirm a diagnosis, so consult your doctor for further evaluation and interpretation.

• You will be given a special container to collect all your urine over 24 hours.
• Ensure that you follow proper urine collection instructions to obtain accurate results.

• Avoid copper-rich foods like chocolate, nuts, liver, shellfish, mushrooms, and whole grains for at least 48 hours before the test.
• Inform your doctor about any supplements or medications you are taking, as some may interfere with copper levels.
• Reach out to your doctor or healthcare provider for any specific requirements.
