Beryllium EDTA Whole Blood Test

The test measures the amount of beryllium in your blood.

• To detect toxic exposure to beryllium
• To determine the extent of exposure,
• To assess the risks of developing related health issues such as lung diseases or chronic beryllium disease

The test is recommended for

• people exposed to beryllium through work, hobbies, or living near a facility that uses beryllium and
• workers in industries like aerospace, defence, and dental laboratories to monitor their exposure levels.

Elevated levels of beryllium may indicate exposure to the metal. Abnormal results can suggest potential health risks associated with chronic exposure to the metal.

A sample of 5 ml blood is collected through a needle in a metal-free tube. The sample is sent to the laboratory for testing.

No special preparation is required for this test. However, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider to determine if there are any particular requirements you should be aware of.

• Spirometry: This test measures your lung function and determines if you’re experiencing any breathing difficulties.
• Chest X-Ray: This is an imaging test that helps to identify any abnormalities in your lungs and assess the extent of any lung disease.
• Calcium EDTA urine test: This test quantifies the level of beryllium in urine to detect exposure to the metal earlier.
