Barium Hair Test by ICPMS

This test measures the amount of barium present in your body through hair samples over a period of time.

This test is mainly done -

• To Identify environmental or occupational exposure to barium
• For hair growth evaluation
• Detecting poisoning from barium salts
• Assessing nutritional deficiency
• Diagnosing neurological or other disorders

Your doctor might recommend this test if you

• Have been exposed to barium.
• Are exhibiting symptoms of exposure, such as frequent coughing, breathing difficulties, cardiac arrhythmia, high blood pressure, or gastrointestinal issues.
• Are being treated with chemotherapy drugs containing platinum. 

Higher levels may indicate chronic exposure or recent ingestion of barium-containing compounds. High levels of barium indicate environmental or occupational exposure that may cause health problems such as muscle weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, and baritosis, which is the accumulation of barium in your lungs. 

For this test, a sample of your untreated, unwashed hair (approximately weighing 1 gram) is taken at the nape of the neck using scissors. You may feel some discomfort during the process, but it is generally painless. 

There are no specific preparations required before taking this test. However, avoid washing your hair with any hair products for a week before the test as it can affect the accuracy of the result. It is advisable to consult your healthcare provider to determine if there are any particular requirements you should be aware of.

Blood and urine tests may be ordered together with hair testing to assess the extent of exposure to barium. Other tests that may be recommended alongside this test include lead, mercury, and arsenic tests.

Baritosis is a disabling lung disease that occurs in people who inhale high levels of barium dust from mining or drilling operations. Symptoms include coughing, chest pain, breathing difficulties, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
