Anaemia Workup Profile

50+ booked in last 3 days

Anaemia Profile can be selected based on RBC Morphology to know the type of anemia.

Anaemia is a condition in which there is a shortage of red blood cells in the body, which can lead to fatigue, weakness, and other symptoms. There are several different types of anaemia, each with its own specific causes and characteristics. Some of the most common types of anaemia include:

  • Iron-deficiency anemia: This type of anemia is caused by a lack of iron in the body. It is the most common form of anemia and is typically caused by a diet that is low in iron or by blood loss.
  • Pernicious anemia: This type of anemia is caused by a deficiency of vitamin B12, which can occur due to a lack of intrinsic factor (a protein secreted by the stomach that is necessary for the absorption of vitamin B12)
  • Folic acid anemia: This type of anemia is caused by a deficiency of folic acid, which can occur due to a poor diet or certain medical conditions.
  • Hemolytic anemia: This type of anemia occurs when red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be produced. It can be caused by genetic conditions, diseases, or certain medications.
  • Aplastic anemia: This type of anemia occurs when the body is unable to produce enough new red blood cells, due to failure of bone marrow function. It can be caused by genetic conditions, exposure to certain chemicals or radiation.
  • Sickle cell anemia: This type of anemia is inherited and caused by abnormal hemoglobin which leads to abnormally shaped red blood cells.
  • Thalassemia: This type of anemia is caused by a genetic disorder that affects the production of hemoglobin.

The Anaemia Workup Profile is selected based on RBC morphology revealed during peripheral blood examination. The exact cause of anemia will be determined by the individual's medical history, symptoms, and lab results. Treatment options will depend on the type of anemia, but may include medications, dietary changes, blood transfusions, or in some cases, surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anaemia Profile is selected based on RBC Morphology.

This profile is for individuals to find out anemia based on RBC Morphology.

Anaemia Profile can be selected based on RBC Morphology to know the type of anemia. Based on RBC structure seen under the microscope future test is determined to give comprehensive diagnosis of the anemia.

An Anemia Workup Profile is done to diagnose and evaluate the cause of anemia and the severity of the condition.

The profile may vary depending on individual's symptoms, medical history, and lab results. The anemia workup profile will provide a more complete picture of the individual's anemia, which will help the healthcare provider to determine the best course of treatment for the individual.

You should get the Anaemia Workup Profile done if you observe the following symptoms:

  • Appetite loss or weight loss
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Brittle nails
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Breathlessness
  • Pale skin, lips and eyes
  • Inability to focus or confusion
  • Loss of memory
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness

A peripheral blood smear examination, also known as a manual blood film or complete blood count (CBC) with differential, is a laboratory test that is used to evaluate the shape, size, and colour of red blood cells, as well as the number and types of white blood cells and platelets in a sample of peripheral blood. This can provide important information about the cause of anemia and other blood disorders.

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

In anemia, the peripheral blood smear examination may reveal the following:

  • Anemia caused by deficiency of iron, vitamin B12, folic acid will show large, immature red blood cells, known as macrocytes, and a reduced number of red blood cells (anemia).
  • Anemia caused by hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) will show a high number of red cells fragments, known as spherocytes, and red cells of different size, shape and color.
  • Anemia caused by aplastic anemia or bone marrow failure will show a reduced number of red blood cells and an increase in the number of immature white blood cells and platelets, known as nucleated red blood cells.

Overall, peripheral blood smear examination is a key component of the anemia profile, providing important information about the characteristics of the red blood cells, which can help healthcare providers identify the specific type of anemia and determine the best course of treatment for the individual.
