Overview

An "Allergen, Individual-Food Cocoa Chocolate (Theobroma Cacao)" test is a blood test used to identify allergies to cocoa. It's helpful for people experiencing reactions after consuming cocoa products like chocolate. The test measures your immune system's response to cocoa, indicating if you have an allergy. This test is done to diagnose a cocoa allergy and determine if you need to avoid cocoa in your diet.

All cocoa and chocolate products are made from the cacao seed. The beans are dried, roasted and ground to make chocolate powder. Cocoa butter is used in manufacturing confections. Cocoa butter is used in chocolate manufacture. If not adequately purified, it may contain cocoa allergens.

If you’ve recognized a reaction to chocolate, it’s important to learn if you are allergic to cocoa because there are multiple other ingredients in chocolate that could be triggering a reaction. You may want to be tested for dairy, wheat, and nuts.

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Detection of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergy to cocoa that may be responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. A negative result indicates that the symptoms are not due to cocoa allergies and other differential diagnoses must be considered.
