Overview

Banana allergies typically affect the mouth and throat area. These allergies can either be caused by a deeper allergy to pollen or latex. This means that if you're allergic to bananas, it's likely that you're also allergic to certain tree pollens, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Or it means that you're allergic to natural rubber latex. Regardless, it's safe to say that severe reactions to bananas won't occur with either of these allergies.

While the most common banana allergies are typically mild, some cases of allergic reactions have been severe enough to cause drops in blood pressure, difficulty breathing, and anaphylactic shock.

The Allergen, Individual-Food Banana Kela (Musa Spp.) test is a diagnostic tool used to identify allergies specifically to bananas. It helps determine if someone's immune system mistakenly reacts to proteins in bananas, causing allergic symptoms like hives, swelling, or digestive issues. This test is beneficial for individuals experiencing allergic reactions after banana consumption and can guide dietary choices to avoid triggers..

  • Itching/swelling (especially of the lips/face/tongue/throat)

Specific IgE measures the concentration of circulating allergen specific IgE for food allergen banana.

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Both: Negative: < 0.1 KAU/L
Both: Positive: => 0.1 KAU/L

Detection of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergy to banana that may be responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. A negative result indicates that the symptoms are not due to banana allergies and other differential diagnoses must be considered.
