Overview

An individual food allergy test, like the one for Celery (Apium graveolens), is a blood test performed to see if someone's immune system overreacts to a specific food protein. This test is done to identify food allergies that may be causing symptoms like hives, swelling, eczema, vomiting, diarrhea, or cramps after eating a particular food.

Celery is an edible herbaceous plant which has been consumed and used medicinally since ancient times. Celery stalks are eaten both raw and cooked in dishes like soups and sauces. Celery seeds are dried and used in celery salt.

Several allergens present in celery have been characterised, including a Bet v 1 homologue, a chlorophyll Ab-binding protein, a profilin and a lipid transfer protein.

An extensive cross-reactivity among the different individual species of the family could be expected and in fact does occur frequently including members of the Rosaceae family (such as peach), cereals from the Poaceae family, pistachio, broccoli, carrot, tomato, melon, and kiwi.

Common signs or symptoms of celery allergy may include the following:

  • Hives or skin rashes
  • Itching/swelling (especially of the lips/face/tongue/throat)

Specific IgE measures the concentration of circulating allergen specific IgE for food allergen celery.

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Both: Negative: < 0.1 KAU/L
Both: Positive: => 0.1 KAU/L

Detection of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergy to celery that may be responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. A negative result indicates that the symptoms are not due to celery allergies and other differential diagnoses must be considered.
