Overview

The Allergen, Individual-Food Basil Ocimum basilicum test is a blood test used to identify allergies to basil, a member of the mint family commonly used in cooking. This test measures the amount of specific IgE antibodies in your blood, which indicate an allergic reaction if basil is present. Though the specific allergen in basil is yet to be identified, this test is helpful for people experiencing symptoms like hives, swelling, or digestive issues after consuming basil and helps them avoid allergic reactions.

Basil is an herb commonly used in cooking for its aroma and flavor. It is often included in pastes such as tomato sauce and pesto, as well as soups, stews, and vegetable dishes. It is also present in chartreuse and other liqueurs. As a member of the Lamiaceae or mint plant family, basil shares many similarities with related plants such as oregano, thyme, mint, and sage..

A basil allergy is the result of your immune system mistakenly identifying basil as a harmful invader. To protect you, your body develops antibodies to fight it off and get rid of it. Producing chemicals such as histamines helps you expel the invaders by causing you to sneeze, tear up, and itch.

Specific IgE measures the concentration of circulating allergen specific IgE for food allergen basil.

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Both: Negative: < 0.1 KAU/L
Both: Positive: => 0.1 KAU/L

Detection of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergy to basil that may be responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. A negative result indicates that the symptoms are not due to basil allergies and other differential diagnoses must be considered.
