Diabetes is a disease that affects the pancreas and its ability to produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that regulates glucose levels in the blood. There are two types of diabetes- Type 1 and Type 2. Both types of diabetes increase the risk of developing serious complications.

Type 1 Diabetes

Insulin is a hormone that the body requires to transport glucose from blood to the cells. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that affects the pancreas resulting in little or no insulin. Without this hormone, the blood glucose levels rise dangerously high.

Type 1 Diabetes is not caused by lifestyle factors and cannot be prevented. People who develop this condition need to seek medical advice immediately as it can cause severe complications. Type 1 accounts for 10–15% of all cases of diagnosed diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes occurs due to insulin deficiency and insulin resistance, causing high blood glucose levels. It can often remain undiagnosed for a long time and is detected during a routine urine glucose test or blood test.

Genetics and lifestyle are amongst the most common causes of Type 2 Diabetes. Genetic factors include ethnic background and family history. High blood pressure, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, and smoking aggravates the risk.

Some common signs of diabetes are:

  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Increased hunger
  • Blurred vision
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Slow healing sores
  • Frequent infections
  • Tingling hands and feet
  • Red, swollen, & tender gums

If you’ve spotted any of these symptoms, then it is important to get tested as timely detection can help in managing diabetes better.

Regular health check-ups help in timely detection of diabetes, as undiagnosed diabetes can lead to serious health problems related to heart, kidneys, nerves, mouth, eyes, and feet. By taking regular health check-ups you can spot Diabetes and other health issues early on.

Schedule a visit to your home or office.
Note:
Preventive health check-ups of up to Rs.5000/- help you save tax under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act.
