Copper (Cu) is an important trace element that is associated with a number of metalloproteins. Up to 90% of Cu exported from the liver into peripheral blood is in the protein bound form either to ceruloplasmin, transcuprein, or metallothionein. Copper metabolism is disturbed in Wilson's disease, Menkes disease, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis and Indian childhood cirrhosis. Copper levels are low in blood but high in liver in Wilsons disease. In acute liver failure due to Wilsons disease the levels in blood may increase. Results of copper are often interpreted together with ceruloplasmin.
