Homocysteine Test Overview
Homocysteine is a type of amino acid used to make proteins. Vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and folic acid helps to break down homocysteine and change it into other substances your body needs. A homocysteine serum test is conducted to measure the amount of homocysteine (an amino acid) in the body. Homocysteine levels in the blood can indicate vitamin B deficiency, heart disease, or a rare inherited disorder (homocystinuria). If your homocysteine level is too high, it can damage your arteries and cause dangerous blood clots to form. If you have high levels of homocysteine in your blood, it may be associated with a vitamin deficiency, heart disease, or a rare inherited disorder (homocysteinuria).
