The JC polyomavirus is found in humans and usually does not cause any harm. However, in some cases, it can lead to an infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. The JC DNA Detection by Real-Time PCR test is used to detect the presence of JC polyomavirus DNA in EDTA plasma. This test is performed to diagnose or monitor JC polyomavirus-associated conditions, such as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), which can occur in individuals with weakened immune systems, particularly those with HIV/AIDS or undergoing immunosuppressive therapies.

This test may be recommended if you have • a weakened immune system due to conditions such as HIV or cancer, or • symptoms of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy such as weakness, vision problems, or difficulty speaking.
The normal result for this test is negative, indicating that the virus is not present in your urine. If the test result is positive, it may indicate that you have an active JC virus infection or are at risk of developing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.
You will be asked to provide a 15ml spot urine sample in a sterile leak-proof container. The sample will be sent to the laboratory for testing using the real-time PCR method.
