JC DNA Detection by Real-time PCR - Urine Pathology Test

This test detects the presence of JC polyomavirus in your urine.

• To diagnose and monitor JC virus infection in people with weakened immune systems • To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy • To confirm suspected progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy

This test may be recommended if you have • a weakened immune system due to conditions such as HIV or cancer, or • symptoms of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy such as weakness, vision problems, or difficulty speaking.

The normal result for this test is negative, indicating that the virus is not present in your urine. If the test result is positive, it may indicate that you have an active JC virus infection or are at risk of developing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

You will be asked to provide a 15ml spot urine sample in a sterile leak-proof container. The sample will be sent to the laboratory for testing using the real-time PCR method.

Along with this test, your doctor may advise blood tests to check for antibodies to the virus.
