What is an EPO (Erythropoietin) Test?

The EPO Test, also known as the Erythropoietin Test, measures the level of erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone produced mainly by the kidneys that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells (RBCs). This test helps doctors determine whether abnormal red blood cell counts are caused by issues with the bone marrow, kidneys, or oxygen levels in the body.
