Urinary tract infection (UTI) means infection involving any part of your urinary system starting from kidneys to urethra including urinary bladder. UTI is a common problem, especially in women who are sexually active. It is usually seen that women develop urinary tract infection at least once in their lifetime. The most common mechanism is bacterias gaining access to the urinary tract via urethra and travelling up the tract. Women are more susceptible than men because of the small length of the urinary tract.

A urine culture and sensitivity test is used to identify infections in your urethra or genital tract. Urinary tract is the passage by which urine produced by kidneys is excreted out of the body. It is usually stored in the urinary bladder for a short period of time before one develops an urge to urinate. This stored urine then passed through urethra while micturition. Normally this urine is sterile with no bacterias unlike stools, and one way valves present in the urinary tract help keep urine free from any infection.
