Like peanuts, soybeans are legumes and contain similar proteins to tree nuts. Therefore, individuals allergic to soybeans may also be allergic to peanuts, and tree nuts, like almonds, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, and cashews. Most food allergies develop in childhood and may be outgrown over time, but many suffer from lifelong allergies, including soybeans.

Consuming soybeans or soy products may activate an individual's immune system response. The key allergens in soybeans are the proteins: Gly m 5, Gly m 6, and Gly m 4. Once ingested, the immune system will view these proteins as harmful and produce antibodies to combat these invaders. Unfortunately, these antibodies cause a chemical known as histamine to be released, triggering an allergic reaction.
