Overview

Ganglioside IgG antibodies are autoantibodies that target gangliosides, which are complex molecules found in the cell membrane of neurons. Anti-ganglioside antibodies are associated with several immunologically mediated peripheral neuropathies e.g. anti-GM1 (IgM) with multifocal motor neuropathy, GQ1b (IgG) with the Miller-Fisher syndrome and GM1 (IgG) with the Guillain-Barre syndrome.
When ganglioside IgG antibodies are present in the serum (the liquid component of blood), it can be indicative of these neurological disorders. Therefore, ganglioside IgG antibody serum testing is often used as a diagnostic tool to help confirm the presence of these conditions.
