80% of the time Food Intolerance is confused with Food Allergy

In the modern world, we have become more and more dependent on the availability of different foods, which not only make our life more interesting, but also help us to maintain overall health.

However, there are certain foods that may cause problems to your body. You may face some difficulties and may observe many symptoms. It may cause an unpleasant feeling in the stomach, which manifests itself as bloating or diarrhoea. This is known as Food Intolerance.

Some of the main food intolerances are towards lactose and gluten grains. They're often confused with food allergies which is a hypersensitivity of the immune system to a particular food. Food intolerance is a difficult phenomenon, and it is very hard to recognize even for doctors. It is not easy to determine whether somebody has a food intolerance or allergy because the signs and symptoms often overlap. Hence, patients are advised to keep a diary and write down which foods are eaten, what the symptoms were like when they appeared.

To cut down on hassle and unnecessary steps, Metropolis offers you the Food Intolerance Test - a diagnostic test that helps you find which foods you are intolerant to.

With a single test, identify your tolerance levels for 200+ food varieties and find out what is going on inside your body.

Test Name Details
Food Intolerance Test Specific IgG of 200+ Food Varieties
  • Stomach pain

  • Bloating

  • Diarrhoea

  • Skin rashes and itching

  • Lactose Intolerance due to a sugar or due to casein (protein) found in milk.
  • Gluten Intolerance - a protein found in grains such as wheat, rye, and barley.
  • Intolerance because of foods like milk, wheat, peanuts, walnuts, pecans, almonds, eggs (particularly yolks), fish , shellfish, soy, mushrooms, red wine, beer, and certain foods that contain sulfite (used as a preservative)

  • Dairy

  • Seafood

  • Fruit

  • Grain

  • Herbs/Spices

  • Meat

Food Intolerance

  • It’s the digestive system’s response to certain foods
  • It’s IgG dependent
  • The response is relatively slow after consumption of the causative food, takes hours/days
  • The response generated is dose dependent. The reaction doesn’t occur unless the food is consumed in sufficient amounts.
  • Reactions produced are generally mild and non-life threatening
  • The causative food can be safely consumed after a few days by having a food trial
  • Diagnosis is done by clinical findings. By keeping a food diary and IgG dependent tests like protein microarray

Food Allergy

  • It’s the immune reaction towards a specific food protein (allergen)
  • It’s specific IgE dependent
  • The response is immediate after consumption of the allergen, usually within minutes
  • Some reactions could be severe and even life threatening
  • Some reactions could be severe and even life threatening
  • Diagnosis is generally done clinically, by specific allergy tests from serum or by performing skin prick tests.

The principle of food intolerance testing is based on Protein microarray biochip technology which has more than 200 food proteins embedded over the small chip. The serum to be tested contains the antibodies (specific IgG) against the protein over the chip which is picked and determined by the computer.

  • Foods that are NORMAL (IgG <24 IU/ml) – depicted in Green color code
  • Foods that are BORDERLINE (IgG 24-30 IU/ml) – depicted in Yellow color code
  • Foods that are ELEVATED (IgG >30 IU/ml) – depicted in Red color code
ELEVATED BORDERLINE NORMAL
Indicates a strong antibody reaction to that particular food. Indicates a lower antibody reaction to that particular food. Indicates no significant reaction to that particular food.
You should eliminate these foods for at least 3 months. Substitute other foods listed in the NORMAL column and the relevant food section. For example, if your test indicates you are intolerant to wheat then cut out wheat and replace with a variety of oats, rye bread, quinoa and brown rice (as long as none of these are in the ELEVATED column) to ensure you are still obtaining a wide variety of nutrients in your diet.

NB If there are no foods in the ELEVATED column then the BORDERLINE loods should be avoided for 3 months
You should reduce and rotate these foods for at least 3 months to avoid an increase in intolerance.

To rotate foods, you need to eat them no more than once every 4 days. For example, to rotate wheat, you could have wheat bread on day 1: oat cakes on day 2: corn bread on day 3; rye bread on day 4: durum wheat pasta on day 5 etc. Choose alternative foods from the green NORMAL column and the relevant food section (found in Planning your Diet). Ensure these foods are not listed in the ELEVATED column.
These foods can be eaten you should continue to avoid them as this reaction could be due to a non without restriction, unless you already know of specific foods that have previously caused a reaction. In such cases, immune mechanism.

You can use this information to create a more healthy diet and lifestyle, as well as find new foods that will help satisfy your dietary needs.
