The JAK2 Mutation test looks for mutations in Janus Kinase 2 gene
To aid diagnose bone marrow disorders called as myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) in which the bone marrow creates too many of one or more types of blood cells.
The JAK2 V617F test is usually recommended by the doctor if he suspects that the patient may be suffering from myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN). The symptoms include:
- Blood clot in the vein or artery
- Heart attack
- Bleeding
- Problems with vision
- Stroke
- Kidney stones
- Fever
- Breathing problem
The Janus Kinase 2 gene commonly known as the JAK2 provides commands to cells for creating the JAK2 protein. This protein helps promote cell growth and division and is especially crucial for controlling blood cell production inside the bone marrow. The bone marrow disorders caused JAK2 mutations are known as myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) in which the bone marrow produces way too many WBCs, RBCs and Platelets. Some of the MPNs most commonly associated with JAK2 mutations are: Polycythaemia vera, Essential thrombocythemia and Primary myelofibrosis.

A positive JAK2 V617F result means that the person has a certain bone marrow disorder.
A Negative JAK2 V617F result means that person does not have a bone marrow disorder.
A Negative JAK2 V617F but a positive JAK2 exon 12 would indicate that the person might be suffering from Polycythaemia vera (PV).
