Thyroid Antibodies Test Overview

Thyroperoxidase (TPO) is an enzyme involved in thyroid hormone synthesis.
Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO) antibodies destroy cells of thyroid gland and cause hypothyroidism.
Thyroglobulin (TG) is a protein formed in thyroid gland and serves as a substrate for synthesis of thyroid hormones. Thyroglobulin antibodies (ATA) thus prevent formation of thyroid hormone leading to hypothyroidism. These antibodies are hallmark of Hashimoto thyroiditis but can be seen in Graves' disease also.
Thyroid antibodies test measure both Anti TPO & ATA

TPO and ATG are thyroid antibodies. They are an important tool for doctors and patients when it comes to diagnosing and monitoring diseases related to the thyroid. TPO and ATG are used to measure levels of thyroid antibody proteins in the blood. These can indicate various thyroid problems.

TPO and ATG are the most commonly tested for and will tell the doctor if the patient has an autoimmune condition or a problem with the actual thyroid gland. They can also be used to assess the effectiveness of a patient’s thyroid treatment.

Patients need to understand the different tests and what they mean to ensure they get the best care possible.

What are Thyroid Antibodies-TPO And ATG Serum?

Thyroid Antibodies (TPO and ATG Serum) are a group of tests. They measure the levels of thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin (ATG) antibodies in the blood. TPO is an enzyme. It helps the thyroid gland produce hormones. ATG is a protein in the blood produced by the thyroid gland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thyroid antibodies test is used to aid diagnosis of autoimmune disorder as cause of hypothyroidism

Thyroid Antibodies-TPO and ATG Serum tests are important diagnostic tools for evaluating thyroid functioning and autoimmunity in patients. These tests are essential for detecting autoimmune thyroid diseases, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease, as well as other thyroid disorders.

Here are some key points to consider when understanding why these tests are done:

Thyroid Antibodies- TPO (Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies) test measures the levels of antibodies that attack the thyroid gland. This can lead to autoimmune thyroid diseases.

ATG Serum test - This test measures the protein levels called thyroglobulin. This protein is produced by the thyroid gland. It is a marker of autoimmune thyroid conditions.

Thyroid Antibodies-TPO and ATG Serum tests are essential for diagnosing and monitoring autoimmune thyroid conditions and other thyroid disorders. Doctors and patients can make informed decisions about their treatment by understanding why these tests are done.

Thyroid antibodies test measures the level of ATA, TPO antibody in blood

Thyroid antibodies test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

The Thyroid Antibodies (TPO) and ATG Serum tests detect the TPO and ATG antibody levels in the patient’s serum. High levels of these antibodies may indicate the presence of a thyroid disorder.

Normal levels : no thyroid antibodies were found. This means that symptoms of hypothyroidism are probably not caused by deficiency of TPO or ATA.
High values: suggestive of  Hashimoto thyroiditis; these antibodies can also be seen in Grave's disease

If the results of the Thyroid Antibodies (TPO and ATG Serum) tests are present, it may indicate an active thyroid disorder. If the results are absent, it may indicate the absence of a thyroid disorder.

The Thyroid Antibodies (TPO and ATG) Serum Test is used to detect the presence of thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSI) in a patient’s serum. TSI is produced by the body when it is trying to fight off a thyroid disorder. This test helps to identify the presence of thyroid disorders and monitor the disorder's progress

Thyroid Antibodies (TPO) and Anti-Thyroglobulin (ATG) Serum are antibodies produced by the body in response to thyroid disorders. TPO is produced when the body is trying to fight off a thyroid disorder. ATG is produced when the body is trying to fight off an autoimmune disorder.

Thyroid antibodies (TPO and ATG serum) should be prepared according to the laboratory's instructions. Generally, the patient will be asked to fast for 8-12 hours before the test. He will also be asked not to take any thyroid medications for at least 48 hours before the test.

The normal levels of TPO and ATG antibodies should be below 10 IU/mL. A result that is higher than 10 IU/mL indicates the presence of a thyroid disorder.

Patients should speak with their healthcare provider to determine if this test is right for them. Generally, this test is recommended for those:

  • With known or suspected thyroid disorders such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Who have had a previous episode of hypothyroidism
  • With a family history of thyroid disorders
  • With unexplained fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, brittle nails, or hoarseness
  • Who are being monitored for an existing thyroid disorder

Doctors advise the Thyroid Antibodies-TPO and ATG, Serum Test for people with lifestyle issues such as:

  • Patients with fatigue
  • Those with weight changes
  • Patients with a family history of autoimmune thyroid disease
  • Those with abnormal thyroid gland enlargement
  • Patients with neurological or psychiatric conditions
  • Pregnant women and those planning to conceive

Other tests that may be ordered along with a Thyroid Antibodies-TPO And ATG Serum test include:

  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
  • Free triiodothyronine (FT3)
  • Free thyroxine (FT4)
  • Thyroid autoantibodies
