Myositis Profile-IgG is a comprehensive profile to test for autoantibodies against 16 muscle specific antigens (Mi2, MI-2beta, MDA5, SAE1,TIF1,NXP2,SRP, PL7, PL-12,Jo1, EJ, OJ, PMScl 100, PM Scl 75, Ku,Ro52) in the blood serum.

  • To establish a diagnosis of myositis in patients presenting with clinical symptoms.
  • To further sub classify the sub-type of myositis
  • For differential diagnosis of myositis from other muscle conditions
  • To know the progression of disease in patients with myositis
  • To establish the treatment prognosis.

It is advised that patients with the following clinical signs and symptoms should undergo tests for myositis.

  • Muscle pain with inflammation and swelling
  • Progressive muscle weakness
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Chest tightness or difficulty breathing
  • Other respiratory symptoms
  • Difficulty swallowing.

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Based on the presence or absence of autoantibodies against each of the antigen (Positive or Negative Result) along with the intensity and class of each antibody, the overall result can be determined.

The overall result is given as Negative, Borderline, Positive and Strongly positive.

This helps in diagnosis and further classification of Myositis into further subtypes like Polymyositis, Necrotising Myositis, Overlap Myositis among others.

Some antibodies may also be detected in certain types of neoplasms as well as some autoimmune conditions like ILD.

Hence, further correlation with clinical presentation and other tests may be required for further diagnosis.
