Anti HBsAg Test is mainly used to detect past exposure to HBV and also checks the body immunity levels.
It is used to detect past exposure to HBV; it can also develop from successful vaccination so it is used to conclude the need for vaccination (if anti-HBs is absent) or to establish if a person has recovered from an infection and is immune (cannot get the infection again).
Anti-HBs or HBsAb (hepatitis B surface antibody) is detected in a blood test after the disappearance of HBsAg in persons who are able to get rid of the virus and avoid a chronic infection. The presence of anti-HBs following a novel acute infection generally points towards recovery and a person is then secured (or “immune”) from re-infection with hepatitis B.
Hepatitis B tests may be recommended when someone shows symptoms associated with acute hepatitis. Some of these include:
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea, vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Dark urine
- Pale stools
- Joint pain
- Jaundice

Interpretations
The surface antibody test is always interpreted with additional tests that your doctor may have ordered. However below is a broad perspective of understanding of basic test results.
Negative - No active or past infection; not immune — can be good candidate for vaccine; possibly in the incubation stage
Positive - Immunity due to vaccination, Infection resolved; virus can reactivate if immune system suppressed
