Anti HBs Antibody Test - HbsAg

The Anti HBsAg test detects the presence and measures the quantity of HBV antibodies in the blood. It is used to determine your level of immunity against the virus. It may be used to look for prior exposure to HBV. 
Additionally, the HBsAb test can reveal whether hepatitis B vaccination was successful and help determine if you need a booster vaccine

Determine if a person has been infected with Hepatitis B: If the test is positive, it means the person is either currently or has been infected in the past.

Monitor the vaccine's effectiveness: The antibody test confirms that a person vaccinated has developed immunity against the virus.

Screen blood and organ donors: The test is used to screen out potential donors who may have been infected with Hepatitis B, as the virus can be transmitted through blood transfusions and organ transplants.

The Anti-HbsAg Antibody test measures the number of antibodies generated by the body after infection or exposure to the virus. It is capable of detecting both current and past infections along with a variety of other conditions like immunity, vaccination, etc.

Anti HBsAg test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer

A simple blood test will be conducted to obtain samples from the vein in the arm. No other procedures, such as X-rays or scans, are needed.

 A positive HBsAb result is an indication that you have developed antibodies against HBV and immune to further infection or have been successfully vaccinated (if titre above 10 mIU/mL). If your HBsAb test is negative,  it means that you are susceptible to the virus and a titre below 10 mIU/mL could mean inadequate antibody development post vaccination. 
This test may be negative during the 'window period' or early on in the infection.

No special preparation is required before an Anti HbsAg test. However, you should inform your doctor if you have recently been ill or are on any medication, as this may influence the results.

Normal levels of Anti-HbsAg antibodies vary according to age, sex, and other factors. Levels greater than or equal to 10 IU/ml are generally considered an indicator of protection against Hepatitis B and immunization.

• Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg): This test is typically performed to confirm the presence of an active hepatitis B virus infection.

• Hepatitis B virus DNA quantitation: This test measures the amount of hepatitis B virus DNA in a person's bloodstream. This can indicate whether the person is at risk of chronic or recurrent infection.

• Anti-hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc): This test is used to detect past infections with the hepatitis B virus.

• Total hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs): This test is used to detect the presence of protective antibodies against the hepatitis B virus, which typically indicate a past encounter with the virus.

• Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg): This test detects an active hepatitis B infection.

• Hepatitis B e antibody (anti-HBe): This test detects past exposure to the hepatitis B virus.

• Hepatitis A antibody: This test detects a past or present infection with the hepatitis A virus.
