Overview

Prostate cancer is the formation of tumour cells around the prostate gland (the male reproductive organ). The risk of prostate cancer increases with age in males. The diagnosis or initial screening is done by certain cancer marker and some hormonal tests. Cancer markers or tumour markers are proteins produced by the normal cells as well as cancer cells, but are produced in higher levels by the cancer cells. Prostate Profile consists of tests to measure the levels of tumour markers in the blood. This profile test along with some other specialized tests and investigations may be helpful in the diagnosis of prostate cancer and decide the treatment prognosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prostate Profile measures the PSA, Free PSA, Ratio and Acid Phosphatase- Total and Prostatic Fraction in the blood serum.

  • The test is useful for the initial screening of prostate cancer: This may include patients with suspected clinical signs and symptoms of prostate cancer. It should however not be used in isolation for the diagnosis of prostate cancers.
  • For monitoring treatment and relapse in patients with prostate cancers.
  • The test may be used as a prognostic marker for survival following prostate cancer surgeries.
  • To know the stage of cancer as well as the metastasis status
  • The test can help detect recurrence, metastasis and residual cancer: This may even include patients with a history of cancer of other organs like breast, lung, pancreas etc.

People with the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty or painful urination
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Bleeding during urinating
  • Erectile dysfunctions
  • Family history of prostate cancers

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

PSA- Prostate Specific Antigen

Increase in circulating PSA levels may occur due to benign prostatic hypertrophy, prostatitis, or prostate cancer. Transient increase in PSA can also be seen following per rectal digital or sonological examinations.

Free/Total PSA ratio

In patients with borderline or moderately increased total PSA, and also depending on age, a decreased free: total PSA ratio indicates 49% to 65% risk; while a slightly elevated ratio indicates a 9% to 16% risk for prostate cancer.

  • Prostate Specific Antigen Test [PSA test]
  • Testosterone test
  • Free PSA test

PSA is a glycoprotein produced by the prostate gland. The PSA test is used to detect any abnormalities in the prostrate.

It is advised to interpret Free PSA in conjunction with Total PSA for predicting the prostate cancer risk.

The free: total PSA ratio is useful in assessing the risk of prostate cancer. Another factor to be considered is the age of the patient, as the risk increases with age.
