World Heart Day is celebrated every year on 29th September. It's a day created by the World Heart Federation to inform people around the world about cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is a global campaign through which the federation unites people in the fight against the CVD burden and inspires international action to encourage heart-healthy living.

CVDs originate from an unhealthy lifestyle. They often come with symptoms that worsen over time and eventually lead to serious heart conditions. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in India, accounting for more than 1/4th of overall deaths.

This year, we encourage people to keep their heart health in good shape by taking the right steps and preventive measures to strengthen their hearts. We ask them to #BeHeartHealthy!

The heart is the pump that circulates the blood through an estimated 100,000 km (60,000 miles) of blood vessels. It beats about 100,000 times every day (which adds up to 35million beats/year), pumping around 2000 gallons (7571 ltrs) of blood.

The study of the normal heart and the diseases associated with it is termed as CARDIOLOGY.

Anatomy of Heart

customer

The coronary circulation consists of the blood vessels that supply blood to, and remove blood from, the heart muscle itself.

  • Although blood fills the chambers of the heart, the muscle tissue of the heart, or myocardium, is so thick that it requires coronary blood vessels to deliver blood deep into the myocardium.
  • The vessels that supply blood high in oxygen to the myocardium are known as coronary arteries.
  • The coronary arteries are classified as "end circulation", since they represent the only source of blood supply to the myocardium.

Heart disease or cardiovascular disease includes a range of conditions that affect your heart. Diseases under the heart disease umbrella include blood vessel diseases, such as coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias), and heart defects anyone is born with (congenital heart defects), among others.

Heart disease occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become hardened and narrowed due to a buildup of plaque on the arteries’ inner walls. Plaque is the accumulation of fat, cholesterol, and other substances. As plaque continues to build up in the arteries, blood flow to the heart is reduced.

Heart disease can lead to a heart attack. A heart attack happens when an artery becomes totally blocked with plaque, preventing vital oxygen and nutrients from getting to the heart. A heart attack can cause permanent damage to the heart muscle.

Symptoms

Cardiovascular disease symptoms can be different for men and women. Men are more likely to have chest pain; women are more likely to have other symptoms along with chest pain, such as shortness of breath, nausea and extreme fatigue.

Symptoms can include:

  • Chest pain, chest tightness, chest pressure and chest discomfort (angina)

  • Shortness of breath

  • Pain, numbness, weakness or coldness in your legs or arms

  • Pain in the neck, jaw, throat, upper abdomen or back

  • Nausea and fatigue

Risk Factors

The risk factors for heart disease that you can do something about are:

  • Smoking

  • High blood pressure

  • High blood cholesterol

  • Overweight and obesity

  • Lack of physical activity

  • Unhealthy diet

  • Diabetes and prediabetes Metabolic syndrome

Coronary artery disease

Disease of the heart caused by a buildup of atherosclerotic plaque in the coronary arteries which supply the heart muscle with nutrients and oxygen by circulating blood

Myocardial infarction

Myocardial infarction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack occurs when blood flow decreases or stops to a part of the heart, causing damage to the heart muscle

Heart failure

Also known as congestive heart failure, heart failure occurs when the heart does not pump blood around the body efficiently
