Widal Test For Typhoid

This test measures the levels of specific antibodies in your blood which are produced in response to Salmonella typhi, the bacteria responsible for causing typhoid fever.

This test is mainly done to diagnose a current or past infection with typhoid fever. Other reasons include:

• Evaluating the effectiveness of treatment for typhoid fever
• Monitoring the progression of the infection
• Detecting outbreaks of typhoid fever in communities or institutions

Your doctor might recommend this test if you have:

• Symptoms suggestive of typhoid fever, such as high fever, abdominal pain, headache, and loss of appetite
• Travelled to areas where typhoid fever is common
• Been in close contact with someone diagnosed with typhoid fever

The results of this test are interpreted based on the levels of specific antibodies detected. Elevated levels may indicate a current or recent infection with Salmonella typhi. However, abnormal results do not confirm a diagnosis on their own and should be interpreted by your doctor along with your symptoms, medical history, and other diagnostic tests.

• A small amount of blood will be drawn from a vein in your arm using a needle
• The blood sample will be sent to the laboratory for testing
• The test is quick and relatively painless, although you may feel a slight pinch or prick when the needle is inserted.

• You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking anything, except water, for several hours before the test.
• Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking as they may interfere with the test results.
• Follow any other instructions provided by your doctor, such as stopping certain medications or dietary restrictions.

• Blood culture: To directly identify and isolate the bacteria causing typhoid fever
• Stool culture: To detect Salmonella typhi in fecal samples
• PCR test: A molecular test used to detect the DNA of Salmonella typhi in blood samples

Typhoid Serology Test or Typhi-dot Test
