JC DNA Detection by Real-time PCR - EDTA Blood

This test detects the JC polyoma virus in your blood using a technique called Real-time PCR.

• To diagnose progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), which causes neurological symptoms such as difficulty speaking, weakness, and vision loss • To monitor immunosuppressed patients with a history of the JC virus, evaluate response to therapy • To detect viral reactivation

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have • signs or symptoms of PML such as weakness, confusion, or clumsiness, • a weakened immune system due to conditions like HIV/AIDS or cancer, • undergoing treatment with immunosuppressive drugs like rituximab or natalizumab, or • a history of JC virus infection.

Abnormal results suggesting viral reactivation may require repeat testing and monitoring.

A healthcare professional will insert a needle into your vein and withdraw a small amount of blood. They will send the blood sample to the laboratory for testing.

Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements that you are taking, especially immunosuppressive drugs. Also, let them know if you have any specific requirements.
