T3 Total and Free in Ahmednagar

T3 is a hormone that is produced by your thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is at the back of your neck and produces important hormones that controls how other enzymes perform and is responsible for how your body uses energy.

A T3 test is one of the significant and critical tests to measure or evaluate the functioning of the thyroid gland, as in how well the thyroid is performing its function. This test measures the level of T3 Hormone in the blood.

The Thyroid Gland produced T4 (Thyroxine), some of which gets converted to T3 by a process called De-iodination and happens in peripheral tissues. The Thyroid Gland itself produces T3 but in a much lesser quantity.

Some common symptoms of thyroid disorder include anxiety, weakness and fatigue, difficulty in sleeping, insomnia, increased heart rate (which is related to anxiety), weight loss or gain, increased sensitivity to heat or cold (because thyroid hormones control your body’s temperature), dry puffy skin, bulging eyes or even hand tremors. Sometimes constipation and menstrual irregularities are also associated with thyroid problems.

The T3 test is ordered if a thyroid disorder is suspected. A T4 test and a TSH test may be ordered along with T3 test to understand underlying problems. These three tests put together comprise a Thyroid profile test.

Basically, the thyroid gland produces two kinds of hormones – T3 which is also called as triiodothyronine and T4 called as thyroxine. T3 and T4 are responsible for body’s temperature, metabolism (how energy is utilised) and hear rate.

There are 2 types of T3. Most of the T3 is bound to a protein and the hormone that is not bound to a protein is termed as free. The T3 test measures both Free and Total values. The T3 hormone that is free travels to different parts of your body and circulates freely.

Reference Values

100 to 200 ng/dL is considered normal

Triiodothyronine (T3) values >180 ng/dL in adults or >200 ng/dL in children are consistent with hyperthyroidism or increased thyroid hormone-binding proteins
