HCG Test Overview
Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (β hCG) is a hormone that is produced by the placenta during pregnancy. Test can be positive by the 10th day of pregnancy. β hCG levels can be correlated with weeks of gestation and thus can help identify pathologic pregnancy & miscarriages. Hcg test can be used to identify ectopic pregnancy, trophoblastic diseases and variety of cancers including choriocarcinoma and extra-uterine malignancies.
hCG Beta subunit test is a simple blood test that measures the level of human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) hormone or the pregnancy hormone in the blood. As opposed to an hCG pregnancy test where the presence of the hCG hormone in the urine is measured, the hCG beta subunit serum test is a quantitative test where the amount or concentration of the hormone in the blood is measured. The level of this hormone helps the doctor in assessing the health of the pregnancy and drafting preventive measures in case of a high-risk pregnancy.
Normal Levels of hCG Hormone During Pregnancy
The level of the hCG hormone increases rapidly in the first trimester and declines slowly towards the third trimester. The expected hCG levels in pregnant women throughout the pregnancy are given below:

Hcg test measures Beta hCG in serum of the patient. Beta hCG is produced by placental tissue and also outside placenta by certain tumours. It is also secreted in gestational trophoblastic disease. The serum levels peak at 12th week of gestation, thereafter hCG concentrations fall, levelling off around week 20, significantly above prepregnancy levels. After delivery, miscarriage, or pregnancy termination, hCG falls with a half-life of 24 to 36 hours, until prepregnancy levels are reached
Hcg test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer

In pregnancy, hCG level rise can be correlated with gestational weeks especially in the first trimester.
High level when comparing with weeks of gestation indicates more than one fetus, Choriocarcinoma of the uterus, Hydatidiform mole, Ovarian cancer, Testicular cancer (in men). False high values have been found due to heterophile antibody interference occasionally. The falsely elevated values do not lead to very high levels. Levels above 20 mIU/mL can be detected in urine and this can serve to confirm the false elevation.
Low level may indicate: Fetal death, incomplete miscarriage, threatened spontaneous abortion, ectopic pregnancy
A higher-than-expected level of the hCG hormone could mean:
- Twins or triplets
- Choriocarcinoma
- Testicular cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Molar pregnancy or hydatidiform mole
A lower-than-normal level of hCG level during pregnancy could mean:
- Death of the fetus
- A miscarriage that is not complete
- Miscarriage or abortion
- Ectopic pregnancy or pregnancy outside the uterus
