Dengue IgG and IgM Test Overview

Dengue igg or igm test is done to diagnose dengue infection. Dengue is caused by dengue virus which is transmitted to humans by bite of a mosquito. Typically patient suffers from high grade fever, pain in muscles, behind eyes, bones, headache and develop rash. However, from day 3 to day 7 is a critical period when few patients may develop severe dengue which can be life threatening.

Overview

Dengue is a widespread viral-borne disease found mainly in the tropics and subtropics like Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Dengue virus is transferred to humans through the bites of infected mosquito types Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus.

Dengue IgG Antibody By CLIA Serum Test is performed to detect IgG antibodies to the dengue virus in human blood, serum, or plasma. Most people develop IgG antibodies due to the dengue virus by 2–3 weeks of primary dengue infection. However, in the case of secondary dengue infection, the IgG antibodies increase within 2 days of the onset of signs and symptoms.

What other tests are ordered along with the dengue IgG test?

Complete blood count (CBC) test: Patients with dengue virus infection have platelets less than 1,00,000 /mL. In critical patients, platelets may be as low as 20,000 /mL.

CBC test measures the following:

  • Red Blood Cell
  • White Blood Cell
  • Hematocrit
  • Platelets
  • Hemoglobin.

Dengue IgM antibody test: People with complaints of dengue fever or recent exposure to the disease must undergo this test. Dengue IgM antibody test indicates a recent dengue infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dengue igg or igm test is done for diagnosis of dengue infection. It should ideally be done after 2 weeks of development of symptoms in patient. Most patients will develop IgG antibodies against dengue by 2-3 weeks post primary infection. However, when the patient has dengue for the second time (secondary dengue) the IgG antibodies rise within 2 days of development of symptoms
Patients, post first infection with a different serotype of dengue virus can develop severe form of disease with the following symptoms: abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from nose, gums, blood in stool and restlessness.

A dengue IgG test gets done to:

  • Diagnose dengue virus infection
  • Diagnose a current or recent exposure to the dengue virus
  • Indicate that the patient became infected with the dengue virus in recent times
  • Determine if the patient has ever had dengue fever.

The dengue IgG test should be done by:

  1. People who have recently visited an area where dengue infection is common should go for a dengue IgG test.
  2. People having these warning signs should do the dengue IgG test:
  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting more than three times a day
  • Tenderness of stomach
  • Restlessness
  • Lethargy
  • Mucosal bleed
  • Enlarged liver.

It takes 3–14 days to show symptoms of dengue in the human body.

Symptoms of the mosquito-borne dengue virus infection are as follows:

  • Fever
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Rash
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Muscle aches
  • Bone pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Joint pain
  • Inflammation of stomach.

Dengue igg or igm test  detects presence of dengue virus in the blood

The test measures the presence of dengue virus IgG antibodies in the bloodstream.

The blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm, using a small needle. After the needle is inserted, a small amount of blood will be collected into a test tube or vial. You may feel a  little sting when the needle goes in or out. This usually takes less than five minutes.

A healthcare provider will take your blood sample. An elastic band will get tightly tied to the upper arm. Your skin will be disinfected with cotton soaked in alcohol. The healthcare provider inserts the needle into your vein just above your elbow to collect your blood. The blood will then be poured into a serum separator tube. You may sense a prick when the needle enters and exits your vein. The healthcare provider then puts clean cotton over the punctured area.

Negative

Dengue IgG antibodies increase after 5–7 days of acute infection. The following considerations can help detect the presence of dengue virus IgG antibodies:

  • Positive: More than 2.85 IV
  • Negative: Less than 1.64 IV
  • Equivocal: 1.65–2.84 IV (Questionable presence of antibodies).

A positive IgG result is consistent with exposure to dengue virus. Time of collection of sample is important for interpretation of results. Patients with secondary dengue (at risk of severe dengue) develop IgG antibodies early on in the disease. It is important to remember that IgG antibodies remain positive for years together and should not be interpreted in isolation.
A negative IgG test can result if sample is collected early on in the primary infection. A timely collected sample with negative result means lack of exposure to dengue virus in immunocompetent person

No preparation is required for the dengue IgG test.

Dengue IgG antibodies are usually detectable after the 9th day of dengue virus infection. IgG antibodies last for months to years.

Dengue NS1 gets secreted into the blood during dengue virus infection. It gets detected within 3–4 days of dengue infection. It helps in the early diagnosis of dengue. IgG antibodies are usually detectable after the 9th day of dengue virus infection.

There are three stages of dengue:

  • Febrile (Fever) – The first 3 days of the infection where the patient has a fever of 39–40 degrees C along with weakness, eye pain, joint pain, and body aches.
  • Critical  Lasts from the 3rd to 7th day of infection when fever and blood pressure get reduced. The patient experiences restlessness, weakness, cold skin, rapid heart rate, vomiting of blood, and internal bleeding.

Convalescent (Recovery) – The recovery period starts from the 8th day and lasts about 3–5 days. The patient returns to a normal state and feels hungry, and their pulse becomes normal. The only symptom during this stage is a rash on the arms and legs.
