A thyroid antibodies test is used to help identify autoimmune disorders of the thyroid.

Your doctor may recommend this test for you if he suspects high and low level of thyroid hormones or if he suspects Hashimoto disease or Grave’s Disease. The symptoms are:

The symptoms of Hashimoto disease are:

  • Sudden weight gain
  • Fatigue/weakness
  • Sudden hair loss
  • Constipation

The signs of Grave's disease are:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Anxiety
  • Sleeping difficulty
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Tremors
  • Sweating

Antibodies are proteins made by the immune system to fight external substances like viruses and bacteria. But sometimes antibodies are unable to distinguish between self and nonself and end up attacking own cells, tissues, and organs by mistake. This is known as an autoimmune response. When thyroid antibodies attack healthy thyroid cells, it can lead to an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid. These disorders can cause critical health problems if not treated.

There are different types of thyroid antibodies. A thyroid antibody test mainly measures one or more of the following types of antibodies:

  • Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO).These antibodies can be a sign of:
  • Hashimoto disease. This is an autoimmune disease and the most common cause of  In this condition, thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones.
  • Graves' disease. This is an autoimmune disease and the most common cause of  In this condition, thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormones.
  • Thyroglobulin antibodies (Tg).People with Hashimoto disease have higher levels of Tg and TPO antibodies.

  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor.TSH antibodies are a sign of Grave's disease.

Reference Values

The reference ranges for antithyroid antibodies are as follows: Thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO): Less than 35 IU/mL. Thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb): Less than 20 IU/mL. Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin antibody (TSI): Less than 140% of basal activity.

Interpretations

  • Negative which means that no thyroid antibodies were found.
  • Positive which states that antibodies to TPO and/or Tg were found. This can indicate that you have Hashimoto disease. If antibodies to TPO or TG receptor is found, it indicates that you are suffering from grave’s disease.
