To help you wade through the jargon, we have included a list of the tests and their importance :
SIGNIFICANCE OF HIV TESTING
HIV DUO: Infection with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
weakens the immune system due to which it becomes difficult to protect the body
against various infections resulting in Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
(AIDS).
SIGNIFICANCE OF HBSAG(HEPATITIS B
TESTING)
HbsAg: Hepatitis B surface antigen is a protein antigen
produced by HBV. This antigen is the earliest indicator of acute hepatitis B and
frequently identifies infected people before symptoms appear.
Most carriers appear healthy and symptom free, but some will develop chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis or liver cancer years after becoming infected.
SIGNIFICANCE OF ANTIHCV (HEPATITIS C
TESTING)
This test is important to determine if you have been exposed to hepatitis C virus, such as through contact with infected blood, or have risk factors for hepatitis C infection.
The infection can last a lifetime and may lead to liver cancer. People infected with HCV can become chronic carriers of the virus, although they may have no symptoms.
Infected persons, regardless of whether they have symptoms or not, can transmit their infection to others.
ABNORMAL HAEMOGLOBIN STUDIES
These tests are useful to screen abnormal Hemoglobin disorders such as thalassaemia and sickle cell disease. These tests identify the type of hemoglo- bin in the red blood cell. It is important to have these tests done to determine
if you have an abnormal hemoglobin. An abnormal hemoglobin does not necessarily indicate the presence of a disease. But if you have this trait it will
be important to have your prospective life partner tested so that both of you are aware of your offspring’s hemoglobin type.
